My Thoughts On the New Year: Starting Off With a Bang!

I always enjoy starting off each new year by keeping my radar up for what I believe will be the first big story of the year. 2015 is proving to be rich with new life—a new podcast from Blind Bargains, The release of Be My Eyes, an exciting new app that puts blind and sighted people together to solve problems, and just today, the announcement of Voice Dream Writer, a new word processing app from the creator of Voice Dream. There are some exciting things that will be happening in 2015 for me as well, and I will talk about that more both on this blog and in social media in the coming days. With this new year barely under way, I am excited to see what is in store for the blind community as a whole and for me personally. Let’s all venture forth into this new season with our heads high and our hearts full of expectation.

The End and The Beginning

Since 2004, a little Website known as AccessWatch has existed in the blind community. I had a crazy idea that a resource should exist containing software accessibility reviews. Along with the reviews, I added links to sites that I considered important or useful for one reason or another. My good friend Tyson Treasure who had just graduated from college as a computer programmer and was looking for a job, stepped up and designed the review system for me. A lot of people in the blind community submitted reviews, and before we knew it, AccessWatch was a living, breathing entity. Over the years, my time began to be taken up with other things and AccessWatch began to take a back seat. When I took a look at the site a few weeks ago, I was distressed to see just how far I had allowed the site to drift into antiquity. After starting The Pauls Place, I decided to take down the original AccesssWatch site and point it to this blog. Since the creation of AccessWatch in 2004, many other resources have stepped up to take its place--duplicating and, in most cases, surpassing the original site. As an example of what I am talking about, I need only point you to the AppleVis Website. I doubt that AccessWatch will ever be what it was, but perhaps someday it will live again in some form or other. It was a fun experiment and, in my mind at least, it worked. Thanks to all of you who contributed to the site in its heyday.

Thoughts On the New Year

As we have over the past several years, my wife and I spent New Year's Eve with some good friends. Amid the laughter, snacks and sparkling grape juice, our discussion eventually took a more serious turn as we began to share our wishes for the new year. None of us wanted fame or wealth. We didn't have a lot of material requests at all, in fact. The four of us agreed that just enough was, in fact, enough for 2015. Financial stability with perhaps just a bit left over, good health, and the wisdom to make the most of what we were given seemed to be on all our hearts for the coming year. Feel free to leave your comments and share your hopes and dreams for 2015.
